Saskatchewan Winter Driving

The last few days in southern Saskatchewan have been very foggy. This can create very picturesque scenes of trees covered in frost. However, overnight this fog can also deposit ice on the highway making the morning commute very slippery not to mention the visibility issue fog can create.

We drive to work every morning on a two lane highway. I’m not certain what some people are thinking when they attempt to pass. I don’t have an issue with people passing when conditions are fair and visibility is good. However, some people have no regard for their own safety or others when they are passing cars blindly.

On a couple of occasions, during the last few days, someone was in such a hurry to get to work that they need to pass multiple vehicles at a time.  I guess this is an attempt to make up at most the one minute extra it might take to stay at the back of a line of cars. Not only do these people pass numerous cars at once, they need to pass across the double yellow line. Yes, the double line that means no passing since you can’t see what might be coming over the hill. What is the most puzzling to me, is that they pass in fog. You can only see about 100 feet ahead of you and headlights are only visible through the fog at about 50 yards. When these people were passing, all of a sudden car headlights would shine through the oncoming lane about 50 yards ahead of them and then of course they would need to brake and try to get back into the right hand lane as soon as possible, creating havoc for others who are driving carefully. These close calls does not seem to deter them as they try to pass multiple cars in a row blindly through the fog over and over again.

Some people have no consideration for their own safety or other motorists. I think in this instance it’s necessary to so say that some people are just stupid.  They need to use some common sense before their stupidity creates a tragedy.

Merry Thanksgiving

It`s Thanksgiving weekend in Saskatchewan. Fall is in the air – well, actually snow is in the air. Autumn colours surround us – not really, snow and ice cover the roads. Wasn`t everyone dreaming of a ‘White Thanksgiving?’

At any point in time from September to May winter can strike Saskatchewan. It look as if this year we get a nice early look at our old friend winter. The weather warnings started Friday night and sure enough the snow came early Sunday morning. This kind of weather will make everyone`s Thanksgiving travel a little treacherous. I can`t quite remember if I have ever seen it snow on Thanksgiving.

Maybe the kids can make a snowman as well as their Thanksgiving craft turkeys this year!

Be careful on the roads this weekend and make sure to pack your snow shovel in the car before you leave. Once again the people of Saskatchewan will stand up to adverse weather conditions and show that a good time can still be had on holiday weekends – even if ‘Old Man Winter’ makes an early return to Saskatchewan.

Merry Thanksgiving Saskatchewan!
