For nearly two decades locally-owned Reed Security has been protecting families and businesses.
We spoke with the owner, Virgil Reed, and asked him about the secrets to their success and the hottest trends in home and business security.
“I’ve been in the security business 20 years and I’ve never been more impressed with Smart Technology and how easy it is to use” says Reed. “Today’s consumer wants to feel protected AND use cool technology to stay connected to their homes and businesses”.
Older security systems consisted of a keypad, door sensors, motion sensors, glass-break sensors, smoke sensors and siren that were connected to a main system CPU. Security systems were connected to a phone line and when the alarm sounded electronic signals were sent to our 24/7 Monitoring Stations. An emergency operator would dispatch the Police or Fire Department as well a contact list supplied by the end user.
Today’s smart security systems no longer have archaic looking keypads sitting on the wall that people forget to use. A smart security system has a beautiful HD touchscreen that can also be controlled by smartphone apps. In addition to using traditional, more intelligent detection devices a smart security system can control your entire home or business.
With a smart lock you can lock and unlock doors via a built in keypad or smartphone apps. This is an especially popular tool for parents with kids that keep losing keys. You can check on the status of your doors and garage and know if they’re secured or not. You will also get an instant alert when the kids arrive home from school.
With an HD Wi-Fi Doorbell Camera you can see, talk and listen to the visitor at your front door. When the visitor walks up to the door an instant alert is sent to your smartphone app. All alerts are also recorded to a cloud in HD that you can access anytime. Replaces your existing wired doorbell and requires Wi-Fi connection.
With a smart thermostat you can save on energy costs by setting up schedules. A smart thermostat is also self learning to your preferences and can be controlled by smartphone apps.
There are also smart options to control garage doors, shades, lights and appliances.
Smart systems can cost $1500 or more. Rather than paying large installation fees the trend is for consumers to pay small activation fees and higher monthly fees that range from $39.95/mo. to $69.95/mo. “Our $0 Down programs are very popular” says Reed. “I’m not surprised how many people are upgrading to a smart system”.
Another huge trend is that homeowners are cancelling their home phone lines. Due to the popularity of smartphones and affordability of high speed internet, 1 in 3 homes no longer have a phone line and nearly 85% of Reed Security's new subscribers use Alarm.com 3G/4G cellular and I.P. signalling instead.
Alarm.com 3G/4G signals are sent to Reed's 24/7 Rapid Response Monitoring Stations instantly (10x faster than using a phone line) upon an alarm. Alarm.com comes with patented Crash & Smash Protection that ensures protection even if your security control panel is damaged or destroyed by an intruder. Rest assured - you'll stay protected! Alarm.com works on numerous cellular networks including SaskTel, Bell, Telus, and Rogers. This includes remote rural areas such as farms and lake properties.
Reed Security has 20+ award recognitions for customer service, marketing, new direction, quality management, entrepreneurship and small business of the year. They protect thousands of people across the prairies and have locations in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert and Calgary.
When we asked Reed why his company is so successful he replied “It’s because we have a culture of people that care. We focus on delivering innovative, effective solutions and providing great service. We’re a medium sized local business and this is what makes us different from the big corporations”.
