Community leaders and the Onion Lake RCMP are concerned with an increase in criminal activity in the area, mostly dealing with stolen vehicles, drugs, violent assaults, firearms and home invasions.
After consultation between community stakeholders and the police, crime reduction initiatives have been instigated including more warrants and using Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers to get tips from the public. Another was to bring in extra resources over the August long weekend for targeted enforcement on community and traffic safety. Almost 900 vehicles were stopped between August 3rd and 7th with 140 charges, and 6 impaired driving charges. Police seized what is believed to be cocaine, crystal meth and cannabis and 30 arrest warrants were executed. Onion Lake Cree Nation Chief Wallace Fox says he and his Council will continue to assist and provide support to the police in the joint effort for community safety.
