Business owner Mark Zielke wants to improve transit service and safety in Ward 2, along with repairing a disconnect with City Hall.
Zielke is one of six candidates for the southwest Saskatoon ward that includes the Riversdale, Caswell Hill, Westmount, Pleasant Hill, Meadowgreen, Holiday Park, King George and Montgomery Place neighbourhoods. He says the ward is the largest in Saskatoon, but has seen the lowest voter turnout in past civic elections.
Through door to door conversations, Zielke says people feel that they aren't being engaged with, and "it's turned up the apathy in the ward". He says there isn't enough of a push to encourage newcomers to vote, and for First Nations and Metis people, Ziekle says less than 1 per cent went to vote, which he says cannot happen.
Zielke also says businesses and property owners want to see efficiencies to reduce 5 per cent property taxes.
Incumbent Pat Lorje, non-profit organization manager Hilary Gough, family violence worker Vernon Linklater, businessperson Kelly Parker and courier driver Robert Godfrey are also running for Ward 2 councillor.
