When you win as often as the Saskatoon Hilltops do you’re bound to set a few records along the way.
Saturday the Hilltops posted a 37-25 victory over B.C.’s Westshore Rebels to win their 19th Canadian Bowl title. No team has won the Canadian Bowl more times and since the turn of the century, the Hilltops have been even more dominant with ten national championship victories since the year 2000 including six of the past seven championships. Hilltops head coach Tom Sargeant says he’s proud of the sustained success but pointed out he’s only one of seventy or eighty people involved that make it possible. “The bigger thing than that (Saturday’s win) it’s six in seven. That’s a program. That’s a program that wraps around what we need to do and how we need to do it and we just go do it. We are not a lot of flash and splash but we play good solid football, we believe in what we do and the coaches certainly set the tone for the expectations and the players go match that.” With the win Sargeant passes Frank McCrystal as the CJFL’s all-time wins leader. Sargeant has been a part of 13 national championships; 10 as a head coach, one as a player, and two as an assistant coach. Additionally, Hilltops quarterback Jared Andreychuk, who had 220 yards and three touchdowns in the victory, became just the third quarterback to win four CJFL titles and finished his career 9-0 as a playoff starter.
