It’s finally game day as the Saskatchewan Roughriders open the regular season in Montreal.
The story line that just wouldn’t go away was former Rider quarterback Darian Durant’s first game against his former team following the trade to the Alouettes that marked the team’s acrimonious split with its long-time starting quarterback.
Rider head coach and general manager Chris Jones said the time to move on came and passed a long time ago.
“I think, you know, it’s been exhausted, people have talked about it. I mean, he’s (Durant) a good quarterback and he’s been around a long time, just like K.G. (Kevin Glenn), you know, it’s going to be interesting to see them go head to head,” said Jones who pointed out Glenn makes his return to the Riders as the 7th leading yardage passer in CFL history.
“You don’t play as long as he’s played without being an outstanding football player because he’s had a lot of chances, you know, 17 opportunities to get cut and he’s made it (his team’s) every year, so there’s a reason he’s 7th all time."
The Montreal contest will be game 270 of Glenn’s CFL career and start number 192. The 38-year-old Detroit native who has been with every CFL team except Edmonton said the Rider environment is a good fit at this time in his career.
“It’s a great opportunity for us, I mean as far as the players we have on our team, the coaching staff, it’s a real family-oriented atmosphere, “ said Glenn who added the new Mosaic Stadium is a good place to go to work.
“That stadium to walk into each day is awesome. I mean, that’s motivation to go in every day and get work done,” said Glenn who pointed out the passion of Saskatchewan fans as another reason to return to Regina.
“You can’t forget about the province itself as far as the fans are concerned, so it’s a good situation, I wouldn’t have chosen it if it wasn’t a good situation.”
Glenn was once the backup quarterback to Durant in Saskatchewan.
Game time on TSN is 5;30 p.m. Saskatchewan's home opener vs Winnipeg is July 1 at the new Mosaic Stadium. Opening kick-off will be at 7 p.m.
