Rebecca Ness and Aidan Smithen are the 2017 recipients of the Lloyd Saunders High School Athletic Scholarship Award.
The 2-thousand dollar scholarships are awarded annually to graduating Saskatoon high school athletes to help with their post-secondary educations.
Aidan was a key member of both the Basketball and Football teams for each year at Bishop J. Mahoney. He received the Outstanding Lineman Award for football and Outstanding Rookie for Basketball in grade ten. In grade eleven he received the Hustle, Pride, Desire Award, and in grade twelve, the Leadership Award for Football. Aidan helped lead his football team to a city championship in grade eleven and twelve, along with a provincial championship in grade twelve. He represented Bishop J. Mahoney in four consecutive city finals and Hooplas as a member of the Senior Boys' basketball team. Aidan is continuing his athletic career with the Huskies Men's Basketball team this year while enrolled in kinesiology.
Rebecca was an integral part of the St. Joseph Volleyball, Curling, Badminton, and Track and Field teams. Rebecca helped lead her curling team to Regionals in grade nine and eleven, and Provincials' in grade ten and twelve. She received the Curling Female Athletic Award in grade twelve. Rebecca played one year of junior and three years of senior volleyball, making it to provincials in grade ten and twelve, and earning a provincial bronze medal in grade twelve. As a badminton player, she won a silver medal in junior city's and received the Badminton Female Athletic Award in grade ten and twelve. Rebecca competed in both city and provincial track championships. She won the Top Female Athlete of the Year Award in grade ten. In addition to competing in high school athletics, Rebecca also devoted her time to playing volleyball, fastball, and track and field in the community. She is currently enrolled in Nursing at Saskatchewan Polytechnic with the goal of receiving her four year Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a member of the Volleyball team.
