Another Saskatoon Hilltop graduate is heading west.
Defensive Lineman Tom Schnitzler joined fellow Hilltop grad James Vause with the U-B-C Thunderbirds.
The fifth-year defensive co-captain capped a tremendous 2017 season recovering a fumble on the first offensive series of the Canadian Bowl resulting in a Saskatoon touchdown on the next play and caught his second touchdown pass of the season as the Toppers trounced Windsor 56-11 to claim an unprecedented fourth straight Canadian Junior Football championship. Schnitzler has been a member of all four of those teams.
Schnitzler made a similar catch while lining up as a tight end in the Toppers’ short-yardage goal-line offence during the second game of the regular season in Winnipeg.
The 6’4” 235 lb product of Bishop Mahoney started the regular season blocking two kicks in the Hilltops opening night win in Regina. Schnitzler also recovered another regular season fumble while forcing another in addition to intercepting two passes.
Schnitzler also contributed as a reliable long snapper on punt and field goal attempts.
He becomes the fourth member of the 2017 team that captured the 20th Canadian Bowl title in franchise history to commit to a University program for 2018.
Wide Receiver Sam Mike will suit up with the Regina Rams and Rush End Riley Pickett is heading to the U-of-S Huskies.
