Three shortline railways have agreed to purchase 898 hopper cars from the Saskatchewan Grain Car Corporation.(SGCC)
The sales price is $9.7 million, which works out to an average value of $10,800 per car. "With approximately 14 years of service life remaining, the fleet still has value in the industry," says David Marit, minister responsible for SGCC.Big Sky Rail in west-central Saskatchewan will buy 663 cars. Great Western Railway and Great Sandhills Railway will pick up 150 and 85 cars respectively.The sales should be finalized over the next two to three months.The process started following the March provincial budget when the government announced it would be selling the rail cars.
