I don’t have a generic Air Miles card that I think can be used for any airline as well as merchandise. Correct me if I’m wrong but I haven’t studied up on it. I have had Aeroplan for years that is good for Air Canada and its partners flights as well as having a catalogue of merchandise rewards but I heard last week that Air Canada is going to be dropping Aeroplan in June, 2020 and launching its own loyalty rewards program.
After June 30th, 2020, passengers flying Air Canada will only earn miles on the carrier’s own program, not Aeroplan. Now, at this point from what I understand, Aeroplan will still be around and we will be able to book flights on Air Canada using Aeroplan points, but not on Air Canada’s partners, for example, United or Lufthansa. Of course Aeroplan points can also be accumulated via a bank VISA card and points can be used for merchandise purchases as well as flights and some people will be loath to give that option up by switching to an Air Canada exclusive program….unless it also forms a partnership with a bank to offer a rewards credit card. To switch or not to switch is a question we’ll have to ask ourselves prior to the summer of 2020.
