There was a story in the news last week about a proposed new feature on the south side of the river in Saskatoon’s Rotary Park. It has been referred to as a gazebo but really I would call it a pavilion as it will be large enough to hold a variety of activities under its roof when completed next year. This year, 2017, commemorates the 100th year of Rotary in Saskatoon.
This worldwide humanitarian organization began in 1905 and the Saskatoon Rotary Club held its first meeting in August, 1917. Today there are five Rotary Clubs in the city and a week from next Tuesday, August 15th, there will be a Gala Dinner at Prairieland Park with the current Rotary International President from Australia in town to help celebrate Rotary’s 100th birthday in the city. He will be the guest speaker at the dinner at which I will have the privilege of being the master of ceremonies and where we will also show an interesting video chronicling the history and evolution of Rotary in Saskatoon. Individuals, companies and organizations are welcome and invited to enjoy a nice evening and find out what Rotary quietly does behind the scenes to make Saskatoon and the world a better place. Tickets for the August 15 dinner are available through Picatic. Picatic.com/SaskatoonRotaryCentennial2017.
