The Sports Poll on Sasknow.ca on Tuesday brought up a Rider name from the recent past, John Chick. The question was, “Considering he just signed a contract extension with Hamilton, are you still sore Chick is no longer a Rider”? As of this writing, 9% of respondents weren’t sure because Chick is 34 years old and his “best before” date is quickly coming up but he would still be an asset to the Riders. 24% said no, Rider Nation needs to look ahead, not back.
Two thirds, 67%, said yes, he had a great season last year with the Ti-Cats and would still look good in green and white. Me, I wouldn’t say I’m sore that John Chick isn’t here anymore because I understand that pro football is a business, but after last season I, like many other fans, question letting him as well as Dressler, get away. The Riders didn’t exactly tear up the league and have been in the news for negative reasons involving fines and questionable player signings. I would suggest the pressure is on to have a very good first year in their new digs. I had the opportunity to see the first ever football game at New Mosaic last October between the Huskies and Rams. It’s a terrific facility compared to outdated Taylor Field. However, at the end of the day, it’s the on-field product that counts and the new-car smell will evaporate quickly if we miss the playoffs in 2017. It also wouldn’t bode well for the future of the Head Coach who is also Vice-President and General Manager meaning success or failure will largely be to his credit or blame.
