It's my Parting Shot to rattle on about one of my pet peeves in hockey...the "Loser Point"...
There are those fans of the Prince Albert Raiders that will say the fact that P-A has 11 such points, allowing them to catch up to the Saskatoon Blades in the chase for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot in the W-H-L this season, is sour grapes on my part. While the situation was brought up by an independent blogger over the weekend, no less an authority on the W-H-L than Gregg Drinnan, he and I have been advocating for an end to this insane way of determining standing points from individual games.
Why is the system insane? A team could skate off the ice a non-winner in every game, yet possibly make the playoffs with a record of zero wins, zero regulation-time losses and 72 extra-time losses!! But the N-H-L loves the loser point so the Dub follows blindly.
The time has come for the N-H-L to CHANGE THE STANDINGS FORMAT!! To be quickly followed by all three C-H-L leagues! Either all games are worth three points in the standings or...better yet...no matter how long it takes for a game to be decided, there is a winner and a loser! And, the standings would look like they do in baseball or the N-B-A. Those sports play extra innings or overtime until there is a winner and a loser. No stupid "consolation" point!!
One day, hopefully sooner than later, progressive hockey minds will get over the need to give out a point for being tied after 60 minutes!
If that's sour grapes...so be it. But, I've been on about it before and I will be on about it again...even if the current system were to benefit the Blades!
