It's my Parting Shot for my reactions to the headlines in today's Star-Phoenix Sports Section...
First headline...Everyone was playing for second place...An oral history of the New York Gauchos and BRIT 1988. My reaction...It's a treat to read anything by Dave Deibert...even if it is about Mixed Martial Arts. This piece about the New York Gauchos made history literally leap off the broad-sheet for me. I wasn't here in 1988, but this story makes me feel like I was!
Next headline...Winnipeggers riled by critics. Reaction...Why react to what three members of the San Jose Sharks say about Winnipeg being the worst N-H-L city to play in. It's been happening for as long as I can remember. I remember in the 1980s when L-A Kings forward Charlie Simmer was asked what was the best thing about Winnipeg and his response was, "seeing it out the airplane window as you were leaving." This from a guy who played for the Kenora Thistles of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and probably loved the trips into Winnipeg to play the St. James Canadians, St. Boniface Saints, Kildonan North Stars, Assiniboine Park Monarchs, etc. It's called "Winterpeg" for a reason...and it's a badge of honour for the residents to live through it! Just as it is right now for us folk in Saskatchewan, right?
Last headline...Collaros thrilled at shot to be Riders' starting pivot. My reaction...just sign him already!
