My friend and colleague Paul Figler from Red Deer posted the following tweet over the weekend.
Quote...I used to be so pumped for the Olympics. Now I really don't seem to care, I am left to wonder why. It is possible that even in 2018, there is just not enough coverage of these athletes through non-Olympic years that I just don't have anything invested besides the flag of hashtag-Canada. End quote.
The problem is, when you pit best against best, country versus country, it doesn't matter the sport. It just becomes great theatre...no matter if the game is hockey, curling, snowboarding, volleyball or what have you. Beyond the Olympics, the drama just can't be recreated in a World Cup or exhibition sort of event.
There is coverage of the Olympic sports during the non-Olympic time frame...but who watches the C-B-C regularly, aside from Hockey Night in Canada?! Besides, do those, so-called, minor sports have their non-Olympic games available to be wagered on with Sports Select? Or can you have a fantasy league that will keep the interest level up on a day-to-day basis?
The answers to those three questions are very few; they don't and there isn't! Hence, once every two years we rally around the Maple Leaf and cheer on Mark McMorris and others to be the best they can be! That's just the way it is!
That's my Parting Shot, I'm Les Lazaruk. To quote my favourite signature sign-off from the late, hall-of-fame Winnipeg sportscaster Jack Wells, "And, it turned out nice again!"
